Robin by Steve Harman

Hop

Then stops

Head cocked at two

A cautious calculus clock

Eyes

Full stop Black.

Beak

A pencil thin lead

Sketching the undergrowth.

Hop

Then gone

Green mist

A quivering leaf

Tell tale sign resurfacing

Amid flurry of wing

The orange breast invite

An open season

To murder.

Hop

Then song

A shrill clipped warning

Of territory marked

Defending

Even to death

Inside nature's relentless

Seasonal wheel

Survival chain.
