Richmond Film Society - Screening of 'Elena' (Russia)
26 Oct 2021
Elena, a late middle-aged former nurse from a humble background, shares a luxury apartment with Vladimir, a wealthy older man, whom she nursed back to health a decade ago and subsequently married. She is a dutiful and conscientious wife and, whilst the differences between their backgrounds are apparent, the couple appear reasonably content.
Difficulties arise, however, because each spouse detests the other's adult child from previous marriages. Vladimir's estranged daughter is a hedonistic and entitled party animal, whilst Elena's son is an idle and feckless waster, who regards his mother’s marriage as his meal ticket. Vladimir deplores his son-in-law’s attitude and balks when Elena makes a request for money to resolve a family issue.
Shortly thereafter, a sudden illness and an unexpected reunion threaten Elena's inheritance and she must decide how to respond.
Elena is a discomfiting, understated and quietly gripping film, which benefits from fine cinematography and an outstanding performance from its lead. It is the third feature from director Andrei Zvyagintsev to be shown at RFS, following The Return and Leviathan, which were screened in October 2005 and October 2015 respectively. The film garnered 23 awards worldwide, including the 2011 Special Jury Prize at Cannes.
