    Ellie & Starlight the Musical

Ellie and Starlight the Musical is a heart-warming tale of a strong willed little Yupik Eskimo girl called Ellie and her best friend Starlight the polar bear.

One day Ellie notices that something very strange is happening to her Eskimo house and as she attempts to uncover the mystery, the problem worsens and her pleas for help go unnoticed.

So, with the strength and wisdom of her best friend Starlight, she decides to travel across the Arctic wilderness to seek the help of the village Elders.

Finding out that the village is in real danger, Ellie finally convinces her family of the threat. But this is the start of the big melt and Ellie needs your help now!

Inspired by an article she read about the plight of the Yupik Eskimo in Alaska and the affect that global warming is having on the lives of the children living there, writer Sarah Watson wanted to share their story and in doing so, empower every child to make wiser choices and take responsibility for the global environment in which they live.

Adapted for the stage by Ken Mason with music by William Morris, Ellie & Starlight is a musical theatre production for children aged 3-8yrs with an important message about caring for our planet.

Richmond Film Society – screening of ‘Sweet Country' (Australia)

Set in the Australian outback in 1920 and loosely based on an actual case, the film tells the story of a middle-aged Aboriginal farm-hand who, in fear for his life, kills a violent, boorish and racist landowner whilst acting in self-defence. Lacking any faith in the local justice system (“I’m a blackfella who killed a whitefella”), he and his wife flee and are pursued across the bleak and beautiful landscape by the town’s racist police sergeant and his posse.

Members go free. Non-member tickets are £5 (full-time students £3) and can be purchased in advance from The Exchange’s Box Office (in person or by telephone on 020 8240 2399) or online at http://exchangetwickenham.co.uk/events/. Tickets are also available on the night (cash only).

    Kemp's Jig

Join Will Kemp, Shakespeare's forgotten clown on his 125 mile Morris Dance from London to Norwich.

This is a hilarious and bawdy one man show based on Kemp's own book, “The Nine Daies Wonder”, Will Kemp, a purveyor of “mad jests & merry jigs”, was a famous Elizabethan actor, and a shareholder with Shakespeare in the  Company of Lord Chamberlain’s men.

Will Kemp was a comic superstar, a top banana of his day. His hilarious sketches or “jigs” were famous throughout England, he was one of the original command performers when a royal command really did mean a summons from the Monarch. He went into partnership with classical actor Richard Burbage and up & coming playwright William Shakespeare, and was the original Touchstone, Dogberry and Launcelot Gobbo.  Kemp being a master of his comedic art, though  (and by account not a team player), trouble was bound to follow. According to Kemp ”Shakerags” had absolutely no concept of what humour was about and their volatile relationship is the basis of many of the running jokes in the play.

Kemp's original publicuty seeking Morris dance occurred in either 1599 or 1600 depending on which calendar is used.  Blue Fire are pleased to be reviving the play  on the event's 420 th anniversary (both this year and next!).  "Kemp's Jig"  has previously been seen at the Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company and in 55 countries around the world.  It was the subject of a TV documentary (introduced by Sir Peter Hall) and toured with Sam Wanamaker's company to raise sponsorship for the building of Shakespeare's Globe.

Fans of "Upstart Crow" "Shakespeare in Love" will enjoy the show's irreverance and will cheer the maverick Kemp on his way.
