Twickenham Luminaries: Henrietta Howard and Marble Hill House

Pope's Grotto Trust and English Heritage’s Marble Hill have organised a series of five free virtual lectures on successive evenings starting on Monday 14th September. Each lecture will shine a light on a particular individual associated with a historic building in Twickenham and will be given by an acknowledged expert.

Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk, (1689-1767) has perhaps been best known as mistress to the Prince of Wales, later George II. However, this talk will show that Howard was much more than a mistress. She become an extraordinary figure in the Georgian court and a member of a dynamic circle of writers, poets and politicians. One of her greatest achievements was the construction of her elegant Palladian villa, Marble Hill, and its gardens. This talk will explore how Marble Hill fits into Howard’s fascinating life story, Howard’s role in its creation, and her life at this most hard fought for retreat.

The talk will be given by Dr Megan Leyland, Senior Properties Historian at English Heritage specialising in country houses. Dr Leyland also has a strong interest in gender history. She is responsible for undertaking research and producing content to support new interpretation and dissemination projects. More about the talk and the lecturer can be found here.

Lectures will start at 6 pm and last for approximately 20 minutes with time being allowed for questions and answers at the end. The event will end at or before 7 pm. They will be delivered using Zoom so you will need a computer or tablet with the Zoom program/app on it. You will be sent a link by email shortly before the lecture begins and you should follow this link at the appropriate time to join the audience. If you haven't used Zoom before, you will be prompted to download the appropriate software as soon as you try to join.

TCS Virtual performance; Lacrimosa, Mozart Requiem

Unfortunately due to the general situation Teddington Choral Society had to cancel and postpone its Spring and Summer concerts and suspend its weekly rehearsals. But the choir has organized itself to allow the singers to continue practicing their repertoire and to maintain a strong connection.

We have arranged a weekly project which gives the opportunity to the singers to sign up, record themselves and share their recordings so that we can create a virtual choir performance.

We have been extremely fortunate to have the support of our amazing IT specialist (Seamus, son of our Chairperson) who spent hours editing and mixing the final project.

We are also very thankful with the singers who have taken the courage to participate to these projects.

We also had a very good feedback from the singers who did not participate but enjoyed listening and watching the performances.

The Virtual Performance is a new entry in our range of activities and based on the members enthusiasm and the end results we will definitely continue experimenting it.

    In Flagrante choir

Sing Out! How In Flagrante choir never faltered during lockdown.

In Flagrante’s signature song has long been the joyous Cat Stevens song which starts “ if you want to sing out, sing out”. And we have certainly taken this to heart during lockdown.

Nothing was going to stop us singing out, even if we had to do it via Zoom.

Immediately lockdown curtailed us meeting face to face in our usual venue of St Anne church hall on Kew Green, our wonderful musical director, Eamonn O’Dwyer, arranged for us to meet each week through zoom. As usual we have started every rehearsal with breathing and diction exercises with some novel Covid linked tongue twisters. And then we rehearse both previous and new repertoire with Eamonn initially taking us through each of our parts and then allowing us to sing, accompanied by pre recorded music and voices. It’s as close as we can get to singing together, allowing for different broadband speeds.

Very few of us had ever used Zoom before but with a helping hand from Eamonn we have all mastered it successfully.

Music is sent to us by email each week and we can chose to print or save a few trees by reading it digitally.

My goodness how we have all moved into the digital age, whatever OUR age.

Our virtual rehearsals have been so successful that we have continued without a break. We would normally have stopped for Easter and the Summer but no one was going anywhere. And even if they were they could dial in from anywhere in the world.  We have also become a virtual international choir with singers joining us from America, Germany and Scotland!

In Flagrante has coped well with the strange but new normality, demonstrating an unexpected flexibility to adapt. In this way our friendly community of singers has survived and provided us all with a structure to the week which has at times for some of us lacked structure and routine and contact with other people.

However we have all missed rehearsals in person. We are hoping to get back to real rather than virtual rehearsals soon. And when we do it will be such a delight to hear everyone’s voices. But in the meantime virtual rehearsals have the benefit of no one else hearing your mistakes ( except perhaps the neighbours and your dog!).

If anyone is interested in having a go at singing please contact Cathy at catherine@cjheneegy.co.uk. It’s a bit like singing in the shower! Doing it for your own pleasure and no embarrassment from any duff notes. We would love to “see” you and “hear” you.
