Twickenham Luminaries: Henrietta Howard and Marble Hill House

Pope's Grotto Trust and English Heritage’s Marble Hill have organised a series of five free virtual lectures on successive evenings starting on Monday 14th September. Each lecture will shine a light on a particular individual associated with a historic building in Twickenham and will be given by an acknowledged expert.

Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk, (1689-1767) has perhaps been best known as mistress to the Prince of Wales, later George II. However, this talk will show that Howard was much more than a mistress. She become an extraordinary figure in the Georgian court and a member of a dynamic circle of writers, poets and politicians. One of her greatest achievements was the construction of her elegant Palladian villa, Marble Hill, and its gardens. This talk will explore how Marble Hill fits into Howard’s fascinating life story, Howard’s role in its creation, and her life at this most hard fought for retreat.

The talk will be given by Dr Megan Leyland, Senior Properties Historian at English Heritage specialising in country houses. Dr Leyland also has a strong interest in gender history. She is responsible for undertaking research and producing content to support new interpretation and dissemination projects. More about the talk and the lecturer can be found here.

Lectures will start at 6 pm and last for approximately 20 minutes with time being allowed for questions and answers at the end. The event will end at or before 7 pm. They will be delivered using Zoom so you will need a computer or tablet with the Zoom program/app on it. You will be sent a link by email shortly before the lecture begins and you should follow this link at the appropriate time to join the audience. If you haven't used Zoom before, you will be prompted to download the appropriate software as soon as you try to join.

Twickenham Luminaries: Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill

Pope's Grotto Trust and English Heritage’s Marble Hill have organised a series of five free virtual lectures on successive evenings starting on Monday 14th September. Each lecture will shine a light on a particular individual associated with a historic building in Twickenham and will be given by an acknowledged expert.

Horace Walpole was the son of Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. He devoted his life to politics, the arts, antiquarianism, history, collecting and authorship and, from 1749, the creation of Strawberry Hill, his summer villa. The talk will explore Walpole’s greatest creative achievement, and how it was the clearest manifestation of his personality, interests and place in the world.

It will be given by Michael Snodin, an architectural and design historian and chair of the Strawberry Hill Collection Trust. More about the talk and the lecturer can be found here together with booking information.

Lectures will start at 6 pm and last for approximately 20 minutes with time being allowed for questions and answers at the end. The event will end at or before 7 pm. The House with Only an Attic and a Basement

An exhibition by Pete Swann and Kathryn Maris, curated by Michelle Klein.

The House with Only an Attic and a Basement brings together the work of two artists, painter and sculptor Pete Swann and poet Kathryn Maris, in an exhibition exploring often unspoken and uncomfortable aspects of the human psyche.

The show will include an installation of painted relief portraits by Swann in response to Maris’ cycle of poems, The House of Atreus - darkly comic glimpses of a privileged, dysfunctional family over several decades. Both artists will also exhibit new work created during the coronavirus lockdown period.

Pete Swann is an accomplished painter, industrial designer and craftsman. Pete studied Engineering Product Design at Southbank University and is the chairman of the Richmond Art Society.

Kathryn Maris is a poet, critic and curator based in London. Her ‘House of Atreus’ sequence of poetry won the Ivan Juritz Prize for creative experiment.

Includes Artists’ Talk: Saturday 19th September 2.00pm or 3.00pm – booking with the gallery essential.

TCS Virtual performance; Lacrimosa, Mozart Requiem

Unfortunately due to the general situation Teddington Choral Society had to cancel and postpone its Spring and Summer concerts and suspend its weekly rehearsals. But the choir has organized itself to allow the singers to continue practicing their repertoire and to maintain a strong connection.

We have arranged a weekly project which gives the opportunity to the singers to sign up, record themselves and share their recordings so that we can create a virtual choir performance.

We have been extremely fortunate to have the support of our amazing IT specialist (Seamus, son of our Chairperson) who spent hours editing and mixing the final project.

We are also very thankful with the singers who have taken the courage to participate to these projects.

We also had a very good feedback from the singers who did not participate but enjoyed listening and watching the performances.

The Virtual Performance is a new entry in our range of activities and based on the members enthusiasm and the end results we will definitely continue experimenting it.
