Poem for today by Pete Jardine

The Ring
A symbol of everlasting love
Two carats, platinum gold setting
Lost, causing much heartbreak after only five months
But then she left him for that fireman
So it was superfluous anyway.
Its new home in a gully is not a glamorous setting
Mold grows through it, reaching towards the light
Periodically submerged, fetid and dank
But somehow it’s found its place.
A happy colony of micro-organisms
Celebrate their everlasting love.
