Musical Journeys

The programme has now been released for the Barnes Music Festival in March 2020 with the theme Musical Journeys, featuring music crossing boundaries both cultural and geographic.

We have put a special emphasis on the musicians and stars of Barnes!  We will see childhood Barnes residents return to their geographical roots.  The Opening Concert at St Mary’s on Saturday 7th of March 2020 introduces the theme with Hugo Ticciati who was born in Barnes - and his acclaimed ensemble performing a largely English programme taking us ‘Across the Universe’ with Britten’s Theme & Variations, and inspiring music by Roxanna Panufnik and Gustav Holst among others.

On the 10th of March, world-famous cellist Steven Isserlis who grew up in Barnes will guide us through his personal musical journey around the globe, and on the 16th of March Henry Chandler, acclaimed violist and Director of Music at St Mary’s Barnes - also born and raised in Barnes - will perform with pianist J-P Ekins – always a sold-out event!

At St Michaels Martin Neary will conduct Bach’s B minor Mass. Completed only a year before Bach’s death, in 1749, it is one of the greatest compositions in musical history.

Our all-time favourite Alistair Mc Gowan returns with singer Charlotte Page with their special Coward Show Sincerely Noel whilst Howard Goodall presents his documentary on The Beatles, A Musical Appreciation.

Additionally, during the Festival there is the opportunity for young people living in the area to get involved in their own musical journey with the Barnes Young Musician of the Year Competition. The applications are now open! For detailed guidelines and the application form please visit the Barnes Music Festival website: . The application deadline is the 10th of February 2020.
