Today's Artist is Jan lee Johnson

    Wednesday 5 August 2020 - Friday 7 August 2020

Narrative and humour are suggested in my paintings and drawings. Visual clues, sometimes  'trompe l'oeil' in style with collage-like effect reference history, autobiography and environment. A balance between rendering images, painterly mark makings emerge through multiple layers, physical presence and title.

Lee Johnson spent several years as a 'court artist' creating many character sketches in court trials from memory.

She spent several years as a BBC scenic artist, enjoying the freedom of large scale painting, becoming the first female  artist to work in the scenic department.

Currently Jan is working on a new body of work entitled "Backstories' to be shown in May 2020 at Chelsea Waterside Art Space.   "Images of Iconic artefacts, portraits and eclectic subject matter are imbued with narrative, scandal, intrigue and humour".

I run an active art club of 24 members and all are very keen to meet up after a long imposed lockdown, in september, to share their stories, their experiences and continue as a group to enjoy painting together each Monday.

This painting. 'Lockdown Beauties'.   Acrylic 30x30 cm. trompe l’oeil painting of an antique butterfly collection in a blue box frame.
